Yash Raj Films, a successful movie, media, and entertainment mainstay of India, once again can be credited for sourcing and promoting a promising new face in the film industry, Bhumi Pednekar. She rose to fame by playing the role of an overweight bride in her debut film ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ (2015) opposite Ayushmann Khurrana, directed by Sharat Katariya. Bhumi Pednekar was born in a multi-cultural Hindu family on 18 July 1989 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. She is of Marathi and Haryanvi descent; her father, Satish Pednekar, who was a former home and labor minister of Maharashtra state, died of oral cancer, and her mother, Sumitra Pednekar, turned anti-tobacco activist after the death of her husband. Bhumi has a twin sister, Samiksha, who is a lawyer by profession.

Bhumi Pednekar completed her schooling at Mumbai’s Arya Vidya Mandir School and went to Whistling Woods International Institute of Film, Communication & Media Arts, Mumbai for learning acting. But due to her low attendance, she was expelled from the institute. After a couple of years, she pursued her Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree from the University of Mumbai.

Bhumi Pednekar started her career when she turned 18, as an Assistant Casting Director under Yash Raj Film’s production. She continued to work as Assistant Casting Director for next six years, spending last 3 years under Shanoo Sharma, Senior Casting Director of Yash Raj Films.

After working as an assistant casting director for six years, Bhumi made her film debut as an overweight bride in the YRF’s romantic comedy film ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ (2015) opposite Ayushmann Khurrana, which garnered her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She was believed to be the casting director of the movie while she was told to give a demo for other actors, she thought that it’s just a demo for other actors about the role, actually, it was, indeed, her very own audition and gave almost 100 auditions for the movie. She gained over 25 Kgs of weight for her role in the film and subsequently shaded 27 Kgs after the film was released.

In the same year, Bhumi Pednekar featured in Y-Films’s mini web-series ‘Man’s World’. The four-part series based on showcasing significant issues about gender discrimination and Women Empowerment was digitally premiered on YouTube. The web series also featured famous faces like Parineeti Chopra, Richa Chaddha and Kalki Koechlin.

In 2017, Bhumi appeared in Shree Narayan Singh’s ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ (2017) opposite Akshay Kumar, a social issue film, which tells the trivia of a young woman of rural India who insists on the eradication of open defecation. The film was a commercial success and become her first 100cr film.

Followed by the success of ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’ Bhumi appeared in ‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ (2017) opposite Ayushmann Khurrana, a satire on erectile dysfunction, which bagged five nominations in Filmfare awards including Best Actress.

In 2018, Bhumi Pedenekar appeared in Zoya Akhtar’s segment in the Netflix anthology film Lust Storie, in which she played the role of a maid who has an affair with her employer.

In 2019, Bhumi starred in Tushar Hiranandani’s sports biographical film ‘Saand Ki Aankh’, in which she appeared as the septuagenarian sharpshooter Chandro Tomar, opposite Taapsee Pannu who played her sister-in-law Prakashi Tomar. For this film, both actresses were jointly awarded the Screen Award and Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.

Bhumi also featured in Abhishek Chaubey’s crime drama Sonchiriya (2019), in which she played the role of a young housewife on the run in rural Chambal, alongside Sushant Singh Rajput and Manoj Bajpayee.

Continuing her success journey, Pednekar starred in Bala and Pati Patni Aur Woh. Both films released in 2019 and were commercially successful at the box office.

Her Netflix release of 2020 was ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’, a drama from Alankrita Shrivastava and co-starring Konkona Sen Sharma. She also played brief roles in the comedy-drama film Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and the horror film Bhoot – Part One: The Haunted Ship.

At the end of 2020, Bhumi Pednekar appeared in ‘Durgamati’, a remake of the Telugu horror film Bhaagamathie, in which she played the role of an Indian Administrative Service officer. Her next box office releases are Johar’s historical drama Takht and Badhaai Do, a sequel to the 2018 comedy film Badhaai Ho.
